The Moment I Realized I Couldn’t Wellness My Way Out of Survival Mode

How Post-COVID peripheral neuropathy challenged everything I thought I knew about healing and led me to the foundation I’d been missing all along.

It was a random morning in July of 2024. I got COVID, and then just five days later, my hands and feet started tingling.

It wasn’t like the kind of tingling that happens when your foot falls asleep. It was so much worse than that.

The best way I can describe it is just imagine someone with a million needles poking you in your hands and feet all day long.

Sometimes it felt like burning, numbness, and tiny little electric shocks. Other times it felt like crawling sensations under my skin, like a bug was crawling on me.

Torture.

I remember standing there thinking: what is happening to me?

Because it literally came out of nowhere, and it was so uncomfortable that I immediately knew this wasn’t normal.

The only way to get the pain to ease, even for a second, was to scratch, rub, or hit my hands and feet together. I was constantly moving them, shaking them out, kicking my feet, and itching my hands. I literally looked like a crazy person trying to get it to stop. And honestly? At that point I didn’t even care. I would have done just about anything to make it stop for five minutes.

And the scariest part was that it didn’t go away.

It wasn’t like a one time thing. It was every single day for over a year.

I would wake up hoping it was gone and it would still be there.

Some days were worse than others. Days I genuinely could not function.

Days where I just sat in a hot bath trying to get some relief because the hot water was the only thing that gave me any relief.

Here is the part that really messed with me though…

I thought I was the healthiest I had ever been.

So when this happened it made absolutely no sense.

I had no idea that morning was going to challenge everything I thought I knew about healing.

The Wake Up Call I Didn’t Know I Needed

To understand why this hit me so hard, you need to know a little bit of my story.

My mom died in 2014 and I had a really hard time accepting it. I was drowning in grief and living in a state of pure shock and survival.

In 2016, I hit an all time low emotionally.

And at some point I realized I had a choice. I could stay exactly where I was, or I could start taking ownership of my healing.

I chose healing.

Because more than anything, I wanted to feel like myself again.

That one decision ended up shaping the entire next decade of my life.

What started as a personal healing journey eventually became so much bigger than that. I traveled to Bali for a wellness retreat and had the most intense spiritual awakening of my life. And from that point on, healing became my whole world.

I studied health and wellness coaching through Duke Integrative Medicine. I completed my 200-hour yoga teacher training program. I became a National Board Certified Health & Wellness Coach. I traveled the world, worked with incredible practitioners, partnered with wellness brands, coached as many people as I could, and immersed myself in healing from every angle I could find.

And in 2020, I became a mom. Something I wasn’t always sure would be possible for me during those early years of grief.

Life felt full and beautiful. I was living the life that once felt completely impossible.

So by the time July of 2024 rolled around, I genuinely felt like I was in the best place I had been in years.

Which is exactly why what happened next made no sense to me.

For years I had just assumed that women who were grieving always felt a little off. Overstimulated. Disconnected. Like a piece of them was missing and that was simply the cost of loss.

I had the mentality that that’s just what grief does.

The constant survival mode. The bracing. The never quite feeling settled. I chalked all of it up to grief taking its course.

I thought all of it was grief.

I had no idea there was something else happening underneath it all. Something my body was about to force me to finally see.

The Rabbit Hole: Searching for Answers After Getting a Peripheral Neuropathy Diagnosis

After months and months of misery and searching for answers, I ended up seeing a neurologist. She diagnosed me with peripheral neuropathy and explained that it could potentially become something I lived with for the rest of my life.

I remember leaving that appointment thinking: absolutely not.

I wasn’t ready to accept that this was just my life now. At the time, my quality of life was not great which is exactly why I was so desperate for answers.

The neurologist gave me a few options.

• Additional testing including an EMG and nerve conduction study to look more closely at potential nerve damage.
• Pain medication and nerve medication, which if you know me you know that was not an option.
• Or continuing the holistic approach and seeing what happened.

I chose door number three.

If you are reading this and any of those symptoms sound familiar, I want you to know that you’re not alone and there is a resource that can help. I created the Post COVID Peripheral Neuropathy Starter Guide specifically for this. It walks you through exactly what I learned, where I would begin if I were starting this journey today, the tools that helped me heal, and so much more. It is the resource I wish someone had handed me when I was in the thick of it.

The Nervous System Connection

This entire process forced me to learn about the nervous system and nervous system regulation, because peripheral neuropathy can be a sign of nerve damage. I dove head first into research and honestly became a guinea pig for what works and what doesn’t.

The same questions kept coming up. Why did this happen? How did this happen? How do I heal it? And until I figured it out I wasn’t going to stop.

And what was so interesting was that no matter what new thing I tried, I kept noticing the same thing.

When I was stressed, the tingling got worse. When I felt unsafe, it got worse. When I was sleep deprived or running on empty, it got worse. When I pushed myself too hard, it got worse.

It was like my body had a built in alarm system.

It reminded me of the game Operation I used to play as a kid, where you move the little pieces with metal tweezers and if you touch the side it buzzes. That is exactly what this felt like. My body was buzzing every time something was off. And there was literally no ignoring it.

It became a no brainer that my body was trying to communicate with me.

So I started asking different questions. Questions I had never really stopped to ask myself before.

• Where do I genuinely feel safe?
• Where do I feel like I can fully be myself?
• What situations leave me feeling drained for days?
• What relationships feel supportive, and what relationships leave me feeling activated?
• What am I tolerating?
• What am I ignoring?

Those questions became part of my everyday life. And the answers started changing the way I looked at healing entirely.

Take a moment and ask yourself these same questions. You might be surprised at what comes up for you. I know I was.

The more I paid attention, the more I realized I wasn’t looking at a nerve problem anymore. I was looking at patterns. Patterns I had been living with for years. Patterns I had normalized. And once I saw them, everything clicked.

The Moment Everything Clicked

Up until that point I thought I was trying to heal a nerve problem.

What I eventually realized was that I was trying to heal a body that had been stuck in survival mode for years.

A body carrying grief. A body carrying stress. A body carrying patterns I had normalized. A body that never truly felt safe.

And the answer wasn’t more.

The answer was less.

Healing wasn’t about stacking more wellness on top of a dysregulated nervous system. It was about slowing down long enough to hear what my body had been trying to tell me all along. It was about paying attention to the patterns I had normalized. The things I was tolerating. The places I didn’t feel safe. The ways I had disconnected from myself without even realizing it.

For the first time I stopped asking “what else should I do?” and started asking “what is my body trying to tell me?”

That’s when I realized…

I wasn’t missing another wellness tool. I was missing a foundation.

You can invest in your health. You can build beautiful routines. You can do all the right things. But if your nervous system still feels like it needs to survive, your body will continue responding as though you’re under threat.

You might look good on the outside. But how do you really feel on the inside?

Because that is the part no one really teaches us to pay attention to. And it might be the most important question you ever sit with.

What I Wish Someone Had Told Me Sooner

Looking back there are a few things I wish someone had told me years ago. Not because they would have magically fixed everything. But because they would have saved me years of trying to heal from the wrong direction.

Wellness practices are not the problem. They are beautiful and they absolutely have a place. But think of them like furniture in a house. You can fill every room with beautiful pieces, but if the foundation underneath isn’t solid, nothing ever really settles. The house never quite feels like home.

Functioning is not the same as feeling good. You can show up, perform, and look totally fine on the outside while completely running on fumes underneath. I know because I lived it for years.

Your body is not the enemy. For so long I treated my symptoms like something to fight against. But my body was never working against me. It was trying to get my attention. The moment I started listening to it instead of overriding it, everything began to change.

And the biggest thing I have learned is this. Your nervous system needs to feel safe before it can heal. We keep thinking safety is the reward we get at the end. But it is actually the starting point. When your nervous system finally feels safe, everything else you are already doing starts to work the way it was always meant to.

Why I Created The Hyperspective Health Reset

What started as a desperate search for answers about peripheral neuropathy eventually led me to the nervous system.

And once I started learning about the nervous system, so many things finally started making sense. Not just the tingling or the symptoms. My patterns. My reactions. The ways I had learned to push through after losing my mom. The ways I had adapted to survive.

What I realized was that so many of the things I thought were just part of my personality after loss weren’t really me at all. They were patterns I had learned while trying to survive. And for the first time I understood that healing wasn’t about fixing myself. It was about creating enough safety in my body to reconnect with who I had always been underneath the survival patterns.

It was about rebuilding trust with myself. Learning how to listen to my body. Learning how to feel safe in my own skin again. Learning how to come home to me.

And that’s when it finally clicked.

I wasn’t going to wellness my way out of survival mode.

That realization changed the entire foundation of Hyperspective Health.

And it is ultimately why I created The Hyperspective Health Reset.

Because I know I’m not the only person who has experienced this.

I know what it feels like to lose that sense of safety in your body. I know what it feels like to lose trust in yourself. I know what it feels like to be doing all the right things and still feel disconnected from yourself. And I know how overwhelming it can feel when you don’t know where to start.

The Reset is the course I wish existed when I was trying to figure all of this out myself.

And because I couldn’t find it. I created it.

Inside you’ll learn how to understand your nervous system, restore safety in your body, rebuild trust with yourself, and reconnect with who you truly are.

Not another wellness protocol or another overwhelming checklist. Just a clear path back to yourself.

Because healing isn’t about becoming someone new.

It’s about coming home to who you’ve always been.

And trust me when I say that is still possible. No matter how long you have been living in survival mode.

Grab the Reset here when you’re ready. 🤍
